Hands on Health: Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Q: I have Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy in my back and right leg. This presents as temperature changes, burning, pain and spasm as a result of a complication of an injury. Can you treat this problem and how do you treat it?

A: In this instance, assessing each joint of the spine, sacrum, tailbone, hips and lower leg is a place to start. The mobility of the fascial system; the supportive, connective tissue that lines every bone, muscle and nerve is the next layer of important information. This same assessment is used in the case of disc herniation, lumbar strain or soft tissue injury however, in the case of reflex sympathetic dystrophy there is disruption and irritation of the sympathetic nervous system. I have found it imperative to assess and attend to scar tissue, organs, nerve plexuses and the more profound aspects of the nervous system. Integrated manual, osteopathic and myofascial therapy is applied to each individual as they present their own unique set of circumstances. Lengthening tight tissue, identifying deep core weaknesses and bringing balance to all the systems of the body can create dramatic results in this type of patient. It has been helpful to consult the homeopath for assistance with these more complicated situations
